Artificial intelligence use poses an ESG headache for global financial industry

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is often touted as the cure-all for financial services firms' ability to deal with the looming data onslaught stemming from environmental, social & governance (ESG) regulation. Yet ESG also poses an existential threat to the financial services industry's use of AI The European Union's Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation has required asset management firms to begin collecting millions of data points from the companies in which they invest, and the forthcoming Corporate Sustainable Reporting Directive will only add to the volume of data points. Further, there is the data being collected under the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) initiative and the International Sustainability Standards Board's plans to create a baseline for ESG reporting. Taken all together and it becomes clear that AI-enabled systems will be essential to firms' efforts to make sense of -- and profit from -- all these requirements. The carbon footprint from storing and processing data is enormous and growing, algorithms have already been shown to discriminate against certain groups in the population, and a lack of technology skills in both senior management ranks and the general workforce leave firms vulnerable to mistakes.

Stakeholder Feedback Sought on Artificial Intelligence Use

#artificialintelligence

Technological advancements continue to create new opportunities in Ontario's electricity sector, and many businesses are turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance their operations. If you're an organization that is currently using AI, or exploring the use of it, the IESO wants to hear from you. By taking a short survey, you can help inform a whitepaper the IESO is developing that will provide insight into the opportunities AI can provide for Ontario's electricity market participants and ratepayers. The whitepaper is the latest in the Innovation and Sector Evolution White Paper Series, and an overview was presented to stakeholders at a webinar held yesterday. The survey is a key first step that will provide a foundational understanding of where various segments of Ontario's electricity sector are in their AI journey, and where they expect to be in five years.

Brazil Chamber passes bill establishing guidelines for artificial intelligence use - The Rio Times

#artificialintelligence

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL - The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday, September 29, passed a bill establishing principles and guidelines for the development and use of artificial intelligence (the ability of a machine or system to learn commands on its own and use them). Using this kind of technology to violate the protection of free competition or to engage in abusive market practices will be forbidden. The text will now be debated by the Senate. Deputy Eduardo Bismarck's bill determines that the government issue regulations with guidelines to monitor the risk management of artificial intelligence systems and establish the . . . Artificial Intelligence Uses a Computer Chip Designed for Video Games. Does That Matter?

#artificialintelligence

Participants sit at computers to play a video game at the 2019 DreamHack video gaming festival in Leipzig, Germany. GPUs were originally designed for the video gaming industry because they are particularly good at matrix arithmetic. As AI and machine learning become more and more widespread in the global economy, there is an increasing focus on the hardware that drives them. Currently, nearly all AI systems run on a chip known as a GPU that was designed for video gaming. Are current chip designs fit for purpose in an AI future, or is a new type of chip needed?

Artificial Intelligence Use in Customer Service Is Rising

#artificialintelligence

More and more, companies are shifting towards artificial intelligence (AI) as its first point of contact when it comes to customer service. The movement towards AI is already happening, which can only fuel exchange-traded funds (ETFs) focused on this type of disruptive technology. Per a Forbes article by Unabel cofounder Joao Graca, a "2019 report found that 24% of customer service teams were already using AI and 56% were seeking AI opportunities. And when used wisely, it's working: Among teams employing AI for customer service, 82% reported increased first contact resolution (FCR) rates, while 79% reported increased CSAT or Net Promoter scores." The article noted five ways, in particular, where AI would benefit customer service.

Artificial intelligence use 'must be transparent and accountable'

#artificialintelligence

Companies planning on using artificial intelligence (AI) in their work should ensure it is "transparent and accountable", the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has said. The UK's data watchdog has published its first draft regulatory guidance into the use of AI in collaboration with the Alan Turing Institute. It warned that the public are still uneasy over the use of computer software to make decisions previously made by humans, so any systems must be transparent and provide clear explanations of decisions made. The guidance identified four key principles for AI: transparency, accountability, consideration of context and reflection on impacts. Co-authored with the @turinginst, 'Explaining decisions made with AI' is out for consultation until January 24 2020.

CIO Strategy Council releases standards for artificial intelligence use

#artificialintelligence

Canada's Chief Information Officers (CIO) Strategy Council has published a new set of national standards for the use of artificial intelligence. The standards are meant to aid organizations on how to use developing technologies. The council acknowledges that artificial intelligence is misunderstood, but that companies are attempting to implement it within their organizations. The main focus of the standards is to specify the "minimum requirements in protecting human values and incorporating ethics in the design and use of automated decision systems." According to the standards, AI should drive inclusive growth and benefit people and the planet.

Artificial Intelligence use should keep humans in focus - MITLA

#artificialintelligence

The Malta Information Technology Law Association (MITLA) has appealed to the government not to cede control of information to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and to ensure that information remains driven by humans. In a reaction document to Government's call for public consultation on an ethical framework for AI, MITLA recommended that the human-centric element be kept strongly in focus. To this end, MITLA proposed that human-operated'kill-switches' are introduced to over-ride AI "…malfunctioning or worse, of AI systems". MITLA made a strong recommendation to Government not to grant distinct legal personality to AI systems, so as not to undermine the fundamental principle of human-centric AI, which should respect fundamental human rights. MITLA also said that to ensure that the process of creating an ethical AI framework is coherent, digital rights should first be introduced into the Maltese Constitution.
